14/12/2009 - Season is in full swing

We are starting to shape up quite nicely this season, with strong performances being put on by squads across the board. We hope to carry on our winning momentum into nationals with roughly 10 weeks left in the season. Time to step it up!

At this stage in the season it is too late for new novices to join competitive squads, however we always welcome new recreational and masters rowers - drop us a line! We will start taking on board new novices around Aug/Sep 2010, so train hard!

7/12/2009 - A run down from our masters on their recent trip to the World Masters Games

A word from the Masters Men:

Day 1 C (average age 43) coxed four. Started by winning our heat comfortaby cruising to the finish line- way to start a regatta on an amazing course with water that was a flat as glass. Nice. Raced our Semi 2 hours later - improved our time by 6 seconds and came 5th. Did not qualify for final. A classy Aramoho Wanganui side that thumps us at every other regatta came 7th in the final - we came about 15th out of 50 odd crews -realised that this was going to be a tough regatta.
A (average age 27) coxed four - straight final with 8 boats lining up. Great race with the boys staying in the pack all the way up the course Lads came in 6th overall - great time recorded.

Day 2 B Coxed Eight (average age over 34 -ours was 38)- last in our heat -set our personal best time in an eight -slow start though. Opposition was real class with multiple Olmpic gold medalists in the Russion team that eventually came 4th. An Auckland team came 5th that was full of NZ reps and who we were confident they had a chance to step up and win Gold. They had won before and have been training with full purpose for a couple of years for this -just a class above us. Got to watch the final and it was a buzz seeing the big boats charging down the course. National premier Champ crews would struggle to foot it with these guys. Won by a Melbourne crew.

Day 3 A Coxed Eight - Striaght final - 6th. A new PB again at 3.12 for the 1000 meters. Started well and were competitive for the first 300meters but had a few bad strokes and never really found our rythym again until the last 300meters - we know we can row better and get our time down to close to the best in the world. Got congratulated by Auckland and Wanganui that could seefor the first time that Hamilton can actually row a boat -not just grunt it.Winning time in final was an amazing 2:56 by an Aussie crew and the Big russian crew came second. The top three crews were built like real athletes -most of them around 6ft 4 and 85 kgs. Our team acknowledges that we have some serious training to do to get to the same shape as those boys -and drugs need to be entertained!

Day 4 B coxed four - Wind is getting up -against us and across the course. We have an amazing start and leave the field behind for the first 100m. They gobble us up and spit us out and we eventually come 5th. Slow time because of the wind - but a very good effort. We miss the cut off to make the final - however our time was 5th fastest. No final raced as the wind gets too high and races are cancelled - we take 5th place on time - yeah! Our boys also rowed a B quad that comes 7th and does not qualify for further racing. It was a windy race and the lads rowed shit (by own admission) - this crew won the NZ masters B title 3 weeks ago - so a little bit disappointing.

Top regatta for us with results and rowing that exceeded our expectation - no meadls but quietly contented with our work.

Torino Italy in 4 years. Start training and join the boys and girls for our

next big trip. Also looking at the Pan Pacific games in Gold coast next November and a race in France up the canals some time in the future!

A word from the Masters Women:

The W4C+ came 3rd in their heat by 0.25 of a second so only just missed getting into the final. The W4B+ came 2nd in their heat and 5th in the final. Then the wind had the course looking like the sea and the W8B+ was postponed, but the next day was the same so our 8 and the mixed 8 both got scratched - bummer!

19/07/2009 - Winter 09 update

Rowing through the winter is tough, but we laugh in the face of hypothermia! Current training consists of 2-3 water sessions a week and a few land based sessions + weights. If you are interested then be sure to get in contact!

Whole Club Days are Saturdays at 7am at the HRC Clubhouse (located on Grantham St, before the overbridge and Waikato Rowing Club)
Potential rowers are welcome! Any age/level/fitness level.

Our annual Corporate rowing competition is just around the corner which marks the beginning of our season. If your workplace can get together 9+ people a couple times a week and would be interested in learning to row an eight as a team building exercise then flick us an email. HRC will also be looking for voluntary coaches among current and past rowers of the club. It is great fun so get amongst it!

26/11/2008 - Great start to the season

With the first two regattas under our belt it is apparent that Hamilton RC will have a strong presence in the national rowing scene this year with both men and women competing in novice, club and senior divisions.

The recent KRI Spring Regatta saw top 3 placings made by all squads in various boats. National Champs in Twizel is sure to bring some fierce competition, so keep up the good work people and bring home those medals!

25/9/2008 - A New Season is Looming!

The 08/09 season is coming near, do you want to be part of it?

Whole Club Days are Saturdays at 7am at the HRC Clubhouse (located on Grantham St, before the overbridge and Waikato Rowing Club)
Potential rowers are welcome! Any age/level/fitness level.

Options For Potential Rowers this Season:

Novice level

A category for people new to the sport. Training requirement depends on your crew and coach as well as your reasons for doing the sport. Some novice crews only train twice per week, but obviously when it comes to racing they will struggle against crews that have been training 4 times per week. Contact: Colleen - seejay50(AT)gmail.com (Replace (AT) with @)

Club level

For rowers who are past novice grade but have only been rowing a few years and/or just want to train 5-8 times per week. Contact: Byron - byrona(AT)gallagher.co.nz (Replace (AT) with @)

Senior level

For rowers keen to compete and make rowing the priority in their life. Training will be 10+ sessions per week. With all weekends over summer. Contact: Byron - byrona(AT)gallagher.co.nz (Replace (AT) with @)

Recreational/Masters (26 years and older)

Rowers that have done a novice season and don't want to train at the intensity required for Club. They compete at some summer regatta's but also have their own regatta's to attend.
